Ashraya students win prizes at school sports meet

Ashraya Centre of Learning is focusing not only developing the intellectual faculties of the special needs children in the institution's care, but also their physical fitness. February 29 was an occasion to test the physical abilities of the students as they took part in a sports meet at Kacharakanahalli playground in East Bangalore. What’s more the competitions were extended to involve the parents and the staff of Ashraya as well

The students, staff and parents had a great day of sports and revelry as they took part in different athletics competitions. The students were categorised into 8 groups according to their age and abilities. The students had eight athletics events in all while the teachers, helpers and parents participated in one event each. The following were the categories of events:

◦ Hula hoop race
◦ Zig zag race
◦ Book balancing race
◦ Shuttle relay
◦ Parents race 100 m
◦ Teacher’s race 100 m
◦ Helper’s race 100 m
Students who are physically dependent on caregivers took part in basketball throw and ball in the. The students were guided by the teachers and helpers. The key challenge for the students was understanding the rules and following the instructions on the field.

Ashraya students participated in the event with not only great joy and enthusiasm but they also performed beyond expectations. Ashraya hopes to make the sports events a regular feature in its calendar.
